Water, water, every where, but so little to drink. So true, for less than 1 percent of the world’s water supply is fit to drink. Most is salt water, some is locked up in glaciers, and much of the remainder is either contaminated or unpalatable. It’s been said that 80 percent of the world’s diseases emanate from impure water. In the western world, human populations have been lulled into the idea that tap water, which is generally safe, is also ideal for health. While tap water is disinfected with chlorine, thus preventing water-borne diseases such as typhoid and dysentery, scientists now admit that by-products of chlorine are a likely cause of cancer (kidneys, bladder, brain, stomach).
Home water filters remedy this problem but don’t overcome mineral imbalances. Distilled water is tasteless and dilutes mineral concentrations. Municipal water is softened so it will work in your clothes and dish washer, and so you can bathe without a mineral scum on your body. But softened water is loaded with sodium, which isn’t ideal for health. For decades researchers have known that sudden-death heart attack is linked to a lack of magnesium in drinking water. With this in mind, this author went in search of an ideal drinking water, one that is rich in magnesium, calcium balanced, and low in sodium. The worldwide search narrowed down to a handful of bottled waters.
